Regular Meeting 126 - New Term, New Venue, New Hope

On 11 July 2011, Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club had held a meeting at Panmour Villa Hotel. It was really an exciting night because it was the very first meeting for the new term.

Our new President Michael Wong's opening address was very inspiring and powerful. He hoped that we continue our friends helping friends toastmasters' spirit and aim to achieve greatness together.

Our Past President Eu Inn Hoon was our TME that night. She took over control and introduced our theme for the meeting which was －　So What Who Cares! She did a great job hosting the meeting.

Our beautiful VPE, Catherine Lim was the invocator for that night and she really fired everyone up! All guest and members was motivated by her strong message.

Law Ah Chou, our speechcraft member was stunningly beautiful and became the focus of attention.　She won Best Table Topic Speaker and Best Prepared Speech Speaker. Congratulation also to our club pillar, Ivy Cherng as she won Best Speech Evaluator and she was really worthy of the award.

Bravo to our General Evalautor, Lim Thian Seng. He was superb and thoroughly enjoyed the meeting. He gave a lot of useful and meaningful feedback for our club to improve. He was our role model and hope he can visit our club again.

We also had our new member induction conducted by our VPM.

We had so much laughter and it was indeed a GREAT and SUCCESSFUL MEETING! Each and every member present were proactive as usual.

Our meeting end at 9:45pm and we had our teh tarik session thereafter at the mamak stall for another inspiring, casual and fun meeting

I love the Table Topic sessions which gives us the chance to activate our brains to speak impromptu. I also learnt the correct ways to pronounce the words powerful and clear, including just sufficient body language (52%) and voice in delivering the speech.

I am excited to join KBTC and appreciate the efforts and contribution of the club committees members.

All the sessions are great. I love the Table Topic sessions because from there I challenged myself to speak in front of audience and I become more daring while meeting new friends. I felt if could organize more informal activities which can bond with its members. Eg. Organise outdoor teambuilding activities like flying fox. WOW !!

I like Table Topic session that challenges me to think on the spot. I also had a mentor who guided me to prepare myself before presenting a speech which was very good. KBTC really provides a healthy & positive, interactive environment to improve our communication and delivering message. I enjoyed being here because "No Stress of Expressing" & be ourselves to learn. I hope everyone continue to commit their time & efforts in KBTC a more successful club.

Kelly >> One of the best way to improve my public speaking skill is through the evaluation given by evaluators. Indeed those guidelines from my assigned mentor during meetings helped alot. I am happy & enjoyed for each & every valuable sessions and activities. What I like the most about speechcraft programme is the session of "GET TO THE POINT" which gave me insights on how to deliver my message clearly to people I want to communicate with.

Khor >> I like the session of 1+1=3 as I am very impressed & I learned about the importance of speech value which can inspire the audience. Before this, I try to avoid doing any public speaking, now will try to seize any opportunity for speaking. I like every session of the speechcraft very much! Table Topic is the most challenging. We need to organise and get to the point by impromptu. It helps us to think on our feet and also helps us gain our confidence. Yet, there is still have room of improvement for me and in time I will be better.

To be honest, I personally feel that KBTC is like a family; everyone is sincere & seriously share their guidances & sharing, helping hand and support to each others without hesitation. I feel belong and enjoy being in this club. Real nice environment!!

Lee Choo >>I had slowly transformed by not afraid or frustrated when communiciate with people sincerely and use eye-contact. I can see very clearly the changes in my bad habits & characters as well as before. Before I join Toastmasters, I can't speak with eye-contact. I'd learnt one thing from this session which I only have limited time to share, so try not to share many points in a speech. If I could focus on 1-2 subjects and share my personal experience, it would be great and able to catch the audience's attention.
I like Table Topic session the most because it can test how fast my response to the topic. It's a challenging platform that triggers my ability to response immediate. I did become more confidence and less panic whenever i deliver my speech. And I also enjoyed the experiences & friendships in KBTC. Overall, transformation is a process and it take times yet I can see my transformation from day to day.

Last night, we had a chance to witness the joint meeting involved 5 Clubs, MBTC / TTDI / YSP/ WIM and Mentissa.

With the supports and efforts from 50 "Angels’ hands" from more than 5 clubs, the meeting room was full of high energy.

Siew had taken his courage to speak in front of a group of 50 in Table Topics Session. Good try and great experience!

Ivy conquered her fear in her weakness of English, successfully presented her speech `How to Say It’.

Soh as the General Evaluator, managed to bring the atmosphere of the meeting to a memorable ending.

It was great experience to all of us, including Khor, Teck Chai, and myself. We were so much enjoyed and benefited from the different environment and group of members

Being a new member of the Klang Bilingual Toastmaster Club, I have already learned many things through my observation of the club members.

Members here speak either Mandarin or English or both. Others like me, speak only English with a splatter of Mandarin, whilst others speak mainly Mandarin with little English. There are non Chinese speaking members too. Still, good communication bridges any language barrier!
The warmth, sincere friendship and real teamwork exist here and one can see the enthusiasm and commitment to the club’s success are very much to be admired.
The club members are from various walks of life and their desire to discover their true potential is truly to be admired. From students to home makers to business owners. When we are in the club, we are considered equals. In short, it doesn’t matter who you are, you have the potential to discover your talents and what you don’t know you can learn. A safe place to make mistakes without being judged.

I would indeed recommend anyone, young and old to be a Toastmaster as this is a place to grow to become competent in communication and leadership amongst other things which one will probably won’t learn in school.

Some companies have recommended and sponsored their staff to join toastmasters so that the staff can learn presenting skills which I think is great!

This is definitely a place to let your hair down and just be involved whether to yourself or to the club. Discover the diamond in you. Polish it until it shines.

Your potential can never be uncovered unless you are ready to discover it!

Speechcraft Program

Do you feel nervous when speaking to a group of people, particularly if they are strangers?

Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club (KBTC), a non-profit voluntary organization is bringing to you a program on how to become a successful and confident communicator - Joint SPEECHCRAFT

This is a program designed to coach your public speaking skills. It will be conducted in a series of sessions, which includes training in speaking, listening, thinking, evaluating and leadership.

Who Should Attend?

Open to all interested persons from age 18 and above. This program is limited to maximum of 15 participants.

The purpose is to focus on individual performance with closer personal attention throughout the program.

Word of the day : Perserverance /毅力

Our meeting today was headed by our very own home-bred TM Mary Sai. Today,is her first role as the toastmistress of the evening with many more to come *wink*. She did a fantastic job with getting the audience pumped up and ready to listen before speaker.

Today's Table Topic Session had a very rewarding twist that day as TM Ng Kim Choo was giving out snacks and sweets to every participating impromptu speaker. Next thing I know, all the snacks are gone.

*note to self: Klang Bilingual TMs all very greedy pigs need food for motivation.. hehheh*

There were a total of 6 table topic speakers that day. They are TM Janet, CC & CL Khoo Gee San, TM Michael Wong, TM Lee Jin Fang, TM Ong Hoong Tat and DTM Soh Fong Wai. Each one of the speakers were given different types of challenging topics ranging from " How to increase participation in meeting?" to "Tell us your experience of chasing a boy." *raises eyebrows* I was playing the role of the table topic evaluator that day and BOY did I take notes..!

Not notes on how to tackle a boy! *grr* Notes on each speakers' strong points and area for improvements. I'm Not LYING.

Anyhow, goodies were given out and I even manage to get a taste of some of the snacks! Because Toastmasters are all about SHARING right?*pokes*

Today, we only had ONE assignment speech done by none other than TM Michael Wong. His 2nd Competent Communicator assignment speech entitled "LOVE". He brings us to experience with him what was love at different stages of his life from kindergarten to primary school till the present moment. How the love perception has changed for him from something that is felt physical to something that is experienced emotionally and spiritually. It was an intense speech by TM Michael Wong and all of us look forward to his next speech as with each speech that he shares with us, he shares a part of himself with us too!

Due to lack of assignment speeches, no one is awarded Best Assigned Speech as there was only one speaker. *Not much choice right?*
However, we do have our Best Table Topic Speaker who is none other than Janet who is our guest for the night.

As we ascended to the club business tone, we discussed about the
1. declining rate of role players,
2. declining rate of toastmasters attendance
3. need to reschedule meeting time/day.

Regardless, the meeting ended smoothly and I'm fairly sure that our club will persevere through rocky times and brave the toughest of storm.

Although the meeting's attendance was less than satisfactory...
We still have a fun filled evening!

Word of the day: Gentle / 关怀

The meeting started off with a robust welcome greeting and narration of the amount of care that is put into the basic foundation of Toastmasters International by Ralph C. Smeldley from CC Shirley Cheok (yours truly) the toastmaster/mistress of the evening.

The evening kicked off with an interesting play of table topic, TM Mary Sai asked participants to relate the table topics to the Past, Present and Future. TM Michael Wong, CC Derric, TM Ming Yen, CC Shirley Cheok and guest Angie Ng participated in the table topics speaking of the cuff.

The meeting then continued with an inspiring evaluation workshop by DTM Soh Fong Wai, who taught us about the acronym C.A.R.E also stands for Content, Attention, Retention and Emotion/Expression.

DTM Soh Fong Wai used the table topic speakers’ respective speeches as a platform for the entire floor to understand and apply the C.A.R.E format for the upcoming evaluation speech contest.

The prepared speech of the day started beautifully by TM Esther Ji Lee Yun with her ice-breaking speech “有关于我”. She detailed her life challenges from when she was but a child till the day that she is present standing here today. It was moving to hear the difficulties faced by families during the olden days.

TM Lee Jin Fang, was adorable with her 3^rd assignment speech which was “笑一笑”.

She described to us, how a smile can make a vast difference to the environment around her. It was definitely a gentle reminder to the rest of us that a smile definitely makes the world a better place to be in compared to a frown.

TM Ng Kim Choo with her title ‘My Special Trip’ brought imagination to the table when she described about her experience with Club Med Cherating. She also continuously inspire us through her perseverance that despite hardships and putdowns we can always move up from wherever we are if we look for hard enough and move gradually towards our goals.

All of us came together to wish farewell to Niessah who will be continuing her chosen life’s journey in the greener pastures of Australia. ~Where kangaroo and koala bears are symbol of prosperity~. Everyone bid her farewell and wish her good winds in her sails and also entrust her to share and continue walking the Toastmasters journey even in Australia.

So Niessah! You had better remember us! Because you see how much we CARE for you and because you’re in this post! :P

Evaluation Speech Contest and Installation Night

It was an interesting day where 6 Toastmasters from different background come together to pit against one another in a showdown of evaluating styles and skills. Each one of them bringing different content, different punctuation and different atmosphere into the arena.

The 6 funny Toastmasters are :-
1. Shirley Cheok (The Crapper)
2. Ong Hoong Tat (The Serious)
3. Ng Kim Choo (The Scholarly)
4. Mary Sai (The Gentle)
5. Eu Inn Hoon (The Motherly)
6. Andrew Ng (Deh' Joker)

Each and everyone of them did their best and gave very insightful details of how the speaker could further improve her 'already good' speech (that's in my personal opinion lah).

However, like every contest there will be some who did slightly better than others (gives them more pressure) and some who will walk away with new experiences (more room to shock people with improvement).

Well done to all the participants! Each and everyone of you have done a fantastic job. Even I, myself have learned a lot from each and everyone of you as each of you highlight different aspects of the speech that I never thought of and from each of your evaluation I am able to get to know you slightly better. Thank you everybody. And yes, I'll be representating our Klang Bilingual Toastmaster's Club in the district competition. I honestly hope that I will be able to do our club proud. Thanks again everybody for giving me this opportunity to try out in the bigger arena!

After the installation, everyone then proceeded to a nearby restaurant for a little more fellowship; then it was a goodbye for everyone till they see them again..

Achieving Greatness Together

Achieving Greatness Together a fitting theme brought to us by Tee Yeh Ching, CC with her maiden voyage as the toastmaster of the evening. She did a great job of leading the meeting with ease till the very end. We were also blessed with an official visit by Area C7 Governor Bryan Soo, CC CL . We also have a recurring guest named Jackson who showed keen interest in joining the toastmasters’ family.

Among the highlights of the evening was the Impromptu Speech Session where we see members volunteering one another (Michael volunteered Shirley and likewise) to do an off-the-cuff-speech. It was delightful and exhilarating to see members pushing one another to ‘Achieve Greatness Together’ as impromptu speech are undeniably the ultimate platform to hone our speaking skills to greater heights.

Our grand highlight of the day was inspired by 3 of our club’s aspiring competent communicator. Each brought to the floor different flavors and designs of speech crafting that wowed and entertain the crowd again and again. Fion was young and bright with her ‘BeanSprout’ speech debut, Kelvin made a charming come back with his title ‘Take Action & Change Your World’ and Judy Ong was invigorating with ‘Life Cycle of Nature: Balance Life and Enjoy Life’.

During the evaluation session, Soh Fong Wai, DTM demonstrated how to evaluate using the Sandwich method. Sandwich method is applied with the bottom bread and butter (relegating speaker’s strong points) followed by the fillings (pointing out where the speaker could have done to improve his/her presentation) and the final bread on top (encourage the speaker to do better and continue with his/her toastmaster’s journey).

The meeting adjourn with Soh Fong Wai, DTM winning the best evaluator (yet again! We should have a notice detailing how many best evaluator ribbon in a row!) on another note mother daughter team (Judy Ong the mom and Shirley Cheok the daughter) both brought home the best assigned speech speaker and best table topic speaker.

The meeting ended with dessert served with plenty of delicious fellowship and sprinkles of sparkly feedback at a nearby restaurant.

100th Regular Meeting Celebration Cum Bilingual Table Topics Contest

Energy and team work showed by each team members make KBTC 100th meeting event transform from a plan to a real successful event. Great work and congratulation to each team members!!!

We manage to get 70 people to join the meeting. Everybody were eager for the event to start while sticking their star to thier zodiac posters.

All participants gather around. The participants were brief about the rules. The participants were excited and filled with energy as they share their experience with each other.

Jonathan (D'Utama Toastmasters Club) able to move a head compare to the other participants by getting the 1ST PLACE. HE make his speech to be so enjoying by showing his excellent skill in vocal variety and hand gesture. NJ Singam (WIM Toastmasters Club) and Lee Si Wen (Metropolitan Toastmasters Club) also showed their extraordinary skill in table topic, this make the 1ST RUNNER UP and 2ND RUNNER UP place belong to them.

All the Posters were filled with STARS. Everyone had written their wishes on a star and attached on their zodiac poster. These stars make us felt that there are hopes at any WHERE, any PLACE and any TIME. ALL the best to all of you. :)

Let’t get the ball rolling, Klang Toastmaster Bilingual Club Regular Meeting (83). On the 83th meeting we had 23 distinguish Toastmasters and was being honored by 5 guests, they are:
1. Richard Yeow, CC from CIMA Toastmaster Club

3. Gunasundari
4. Alvin Lim
5. Angela Lee

Our distinguish guest, Richard Yeow, had picked up the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) role and conduct the meeting no lesser than excellence. The theme for tonight is “Believe It and Achieve It”. He started off with sharing with us on the book that he had read, “THE SECRET”. With one of the most famous quotes of today: THE LAW OF ATTRACTION.

Out of surprise and ordinary, we have an Invocation Session tonight, for a long time we did not have this session, and we are astounded that it finally returned! Adrian Kow TM shared with is us about a fishing journey of a 7 years old kid, Sean, who has the passion and persistency for his hobby. Little Sean doesn't care if it's hot, he doesn't care if it's high tide or low or even if the fishes are much more difficult to catch during this period. All he cared and focus on was to enjoy the moment, doing the thing that he loves, and having a believe that, sooner or later, he will catch HIS fish. We the KBTC members and all of Toastmaster international engaged Toastmaster for reasons which we ourselves believed in, whether be it to be better public speakers, better leaders, or even a better communicator. Now if we hold on to this believe of ours, acting on it, persevere with it, and be passionate about it, we too can once again me focused like little Sean, being better, wiser, and before long, be catching our own kind of fish! BELIEVE IT & ACHIEVE IT

The Word of the Day was “Con.fi.dent”, verb. [Prepared by Language Evaluator, Mary Sai, TM] Meaning = certain, positive / self-reliant, assured - Adjective: o Having strong belief or full assurance; confident or fulfillment Eg: Jack was confident he could complete his assignments by this evening. - Noun: o The quality of being certain of your abilities or of having trust in people, plans, or the future. Eg: They don’t sound confident about the future of the industry.

In the Impromptu Speech Session, Joey Chua, CC has challenged us on persuasive skill. Derric Tan, TM he lead off the impromptu session, follow by Siew Ming Yan, TM, our distinguish guest, Gunasundari, Loh Boon Keong, TM, our distinguish guest again, Alvin Loh and end by Alvin Yong, TM. Another pleasant surprise session in our meeting was the Humorous Session; Chew Siew Lei TM has improved a lot on her humor skill. Today she told us a story about a lady went to do her shopping at “Husband Shop”. So, girls, do you wish to visit this shop as well? If you wish to find it out, please check and get the location from Chew Siew Lei (just kidding). The moral of the story is… Girls/Woman is hard to please; they’re never satisfied with the things they have. I hope I got the right points. Anyway, this is a Humor session, and I’m sharing it with fun. Hopefully the ladies won’t get too personal on it. J

Filling up our stomach, now it’s time for us to fill our mind, the TME started the 2nd session, Prepared Speech Session. Today we have 3 speakers, they are:

1. C&L #2 : Organize Your Speech – Patrick Lim, TM Title : Ever Had He has share with what is the secret that lead him towards the achievement that he had achieved today. “The 90/10 Principle”. The Author is Stephen Covey. {What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react! What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. For example, the plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%! How?... ... By your reaction! }(sources from http://www.docstoc.com/docs/12990/10-90-rule)

2. C&L #2 : Organize Your Speech – Cecelia Hoo, TM Title : Why should not be too nice in life? A question comes to my mind after I listen to this title, it contradicts our normal thought that we should try to be nice to everybody! After hearing her story, it have the points of should not be too nice! Her quote: sometime “Too nice = S.T.U.P.I.D” Let’s think about it!

3. C&L #5: Your Body Speaks – Alvin Yong, TM Title : Healthy & Wealthy Life A typically reminder for us, we should life healthy and toward wealthy life! A generous reminder to the smoker, please stop smoke because smoke will spoil your health by cancer! A reminder to non smoker, never ever try to smoke!

今天，是KBTC有史以来最少人的例常活动！只有15位出席者，当中有12位会友及3位口才训练班的会友。今晚并没有来宾！但我们还是顺利的把例常活动圆满的进行。

蔡湘莹CC是今晚的司仪，她的魅力和魄力依然风范，带领我们完成了整个会议。主导师，苏鸿伟DTM，没有他，就没有KBTC，用心良苦的提供了我们一个“游泳池”（巴生双语国际讲演会），让我们可以学习如何“游泳”（沟通与领导能力）。他说：“比赛就是要追求卓越。不要把自己设定在一个让自己觉得舒适的环境下，因为在舒适的环境下，就不会再进步了！”真不愧是我们伟大的主导师，提醒了我们，无论在讲演会还是在人生的过程中，我们都要不断的追求卓越，才能让我们到达另一个高峰！

由于今天也是口才训练班，我们的会长，庄倩云ACS CL为我们准备了一个专题演说 - 运用肌体语言。他提供了一些对演讲很有帮助的参考，那就是只要你投入你的讲稿，享受你的演讲，你的肌体语言就会自然而然的呈现出来！如果刻意的去运用肌体语言，会使你变得很僵硬，更无法达到肌体语言的效果。小小分享，大大的收获，对吧？

This is the first time for me to write a blog on behalf of Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club (KBTC). I am thinking what I should write for the blog? Actually I still have not visit KBTC blog yet, I plan to visit and see how other write, but I don’t do it, because I think I should write what I think on KBTC without affected by others. If I have visited the blog, I may affect by them and write something that out of my style… What do you think ?

Another mountain conquered as we the Klang Toastmaster Bilingual Club with the force of 24 distinguish Toastmasters in our Regular Meeting 81 being honored with 3 wonderful guests:

Toastmaster Chew Siew Lei as the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) with the theme of the meeting was “Forgiveness”. Such a nice word, that led us to think of how many of us are really and truly forgive others? Our Table Topic Master, Patrick Lim also used the same theme to challenge us in the Impromptu Speech Session. All in all we had 6 participants for the Impromptu Speech Session, and it’s unbelievable that among our guest, Ms.Shirley Cheok took the 1^st challenge, and the 2^nd one was challenged by our guest, Ms.Niessah, followed by our member Tee Yeh Ching, Cecelia Hoo, Soh Fong Wai and last but not least Siew Ming Yan. It’s a courtesy of KTBC to give the chance to the guests to have a change in the Table Topics sessions first hence the excitement. J

Remember still, one of the topics given by our TTM, “Asking for forgiveness is easy than asking for permission” thinking back what do you think?

I was personally inspired by Derric's speech, and his quote of “Living through Life or Just Merely passing through”, “To make money and lose our health” and “The beauty & perfection in all imperfection”. By watching the short clip from Youtube that he prepared, it truly inspired me to recall my own personal life. Before this, I dislike my mum to calling me up requesting me to return home early, and repetitively telling me that it is now late! Even in adulthood as I am now, it really gets me annoyed and irritated. Here I would like to take the opportunity to apologize to my mother, sorry mum. After watching the movie, it made me think, because my mum is still with me now, that is why she’s still able to call me up and I should not only value but treasure it! Most of our club members are progressing very quickly tonight we have 4 first timers that signed up for the role play, they are:

一张椅子定情缘

今天的口才训练班好象是把伴随着我们童年长大的小叮当法宝――时光倒流机，把我们这一班七字辈，八字辈的会友们带回六十年代去，而就是这一对夫妇，黄天然与李秀菊夫妇让我们有怀旧之感！

真的很难想象到以下的情景：
v 一名六十年代的打工一族，工资一个月才45元，就足以应付全家大小的日常开销，还绰绰有余。而现在的我们，月入两千元，自己一个人花费都有点入不敷出之感，更别说要养活全家！

v 吃番薯度日？？？
我们现在活在二十一世纪，一个资讯爆发的时代。在这个富裕的年代，痴肥、营养过剩、各式各样的文明病环绕我们，吃番薯度日子根本不存在。

v 在六十年代，哪有什么自由恋爱，儿女私情全由父母作主，李秀菊会友通过她的初试啼声告诉我们她是如何以一张椅子定情缘！

v 现代的人大多数是经过自由恋爱成熟才结婚，可是婚姻却不长久，离婚率的高企不下、家庭成员的不和睦、种种悲剧的产生，以达到让人担忧的地步。相比之下，真不如旧时的盲婚哑嫁！

v 先成家后立业是古代中国人传统，先结婚后创立事业是黄天然与李秀菊夫妇的写照。以现今年青人所推崇的先打好经济基础才结婚，是否代表现代人不能同甘共苦呢？再加上崇向自由，工作压力，现代人日渐趋向晚婚。

v 古时候的媳妇不易当，除了要遵从家中两老，还要严守三纲五常、五伦八德，又要肩负传宗接代的使命，可真不易哦！

所幸我们活在这个年代，丰衣足食、太平盛世，根本没有什么战乱，应该庆幸才是，别再怨天忧人，也应当感谢国际讲演会，让我们有机会聆听不同年代的故事。

Shaping Ourselves

The meeting started on time with an opening address by Tang Chee Yik, TM. Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Lee Siang Yin. She brought us throughout an energetic and exciting meeting with title “Shaping Ourselves”.

The word of the day “constructive” was introduced by our language evaluator, Festus Jaya and was widely used by almost all the speakers throughout the meeting.

Table Topic Master Foo Mei Lee, TM started table topic session by using calendar with some pictures on it. This is to test the awareness of the speakers to speak in 2 minutes by relate the picture in the calendar. This was very challenging and all the speakers spoke pretty well on that day.

Table topic evaluator, Chew Siew Lei, TM gave good comments to all the table topic speakers. Stuart Chan, TM with his speech ‘International Baccalurate: A course for intelligent person’, explained an alternative pre-u course for student after form 5 and parents who plan where to send their children for further studies. Chua Siang Yin, TM delivered her speech with title “marry a rich man?” attracted audience attention, especially ladies audience by gave some informative tips to all ladies how to ‘hook’ a rich man and she also gave some tips to beware of those rich guys.

Soh Fong Wai ACS, ALB as general evaluator has gave us very detail evaluation from the beginning of the meeting, meeting agenda, and role players. He illustrated members as the water in a cup. If the water filled till half cup, there are spaces of improvement. If the cup is empty it means there are still plenty of spaces for improvement and also lack of confidence. If the cup is full with water, it does not means there is no room for improvement but then we might over confident or ego unwilling to accept people’s suggestion. Therefore, we need to ‘filter’. Willingness to learn and share ideas is the best solution to improve ourselves.
The meeting end on time with a closing address by Ivy Cherng, CC, CL. She gave some meaningful point how to shape ourselves by applying the toastmaster to improve ourselves. She also mentioned we have to take initiative to improve ourselves and do not depend upon others.
The meeting adjourned on time.

知足常乐

第三十九次例常活动的司仪是邱宜山胜任讲员出任。他说凡事不要太执着，应以知足心态面对。然而，在学习的路上应以孜孜不倦的心态进修。

出任语言评论员的张玉莲特地挑选人人常犯错的成语~心广体胖。胖在此不念‘胖’（第四声），　念‘盘’（第二声）。总会友恍然大悟，　玉莲，谢谢你！由于每日一词和主题谋和，会友们在运用方面都不成问题。　

心灵小品主持陈月莉会友以崭新的方式呈现。她用一支笔在眼前移动，寓意着当我们的视野狭窄，盲点出现导致眼前的事物都看不清楚。相反地，如果视野像看远距离的笔宽阔，就看得一清二楚。会友们都从笔的移动来体会月莉会友心灵小品的意义。

即席主持李湘莹会友以电影的名字出题。当晚除了有初级备稿作业，会长庄倩云胜任讲员也交出她的高级作业。会友越洁敏胜任讲员首次担任总评论员带来惊喜。
当晚的最佳即席演说有苏鸿伟高级银牌讲员、高级铜牌领导胜出。最佳备稿演说和最佳评论分别由郑月琴和陈启育会友胜出。

‘气球之可以高飞并非因为外形和颜色，而在于它内的氢气。’摘自《黑色的气球》

张玉莲会友说：我常在代课时将这则故事讲给同学们听，希望他们听了以后会像故事里的牧师一样，相信自己，勇敢开创属于自己的人生。
个黑人小孩呆在公园的一个角落，看着一群白人小孩在玩气球。他们手中的气球五彩缤纷，有红、黄、青、紫、蓝、橙。

黑色的气球

突然，他们齐声喊道：‘一、二、三！’同时将手中的气球一放，五颜六色的气球徐徐升上天空，在晴空之下悠游地飘扬着，构成一幅美丽的图画。

当这些白人小孩越走越远后，黑人小孩站了起来，畏畏缩缩的走向卖气球的老伯，小声地对他说：‘我……我……我要买一个红色的气球。’卖气球的老伯面有难色地说：‘对不起，我没有红色的气球可以卖给你。’黑人小孩听了，便说：‘哪就给我一个蓝色的气球吧！’卖气球的老伯抱歉地说：‘真抱歉，蓝色、黄色、青色等的气球都卖完了。’黑人小孩一听，露出相当沮丧的神情。卖气球老伯看到黑人小孩如此失望，就赶紧跟着说：‘你等等，虽然五颜六色的气球卖完了，但我还有一个黑色的气球，我送你好了。’卖气球老伯就黑气球充气后，并将气球绑上长线交到黑人小孩手中。
黑人小孩怯生生地接过了黑气球，带着怀疑的神情望着黑气球，心想：‘这黑气球能飞得上吗？刚才天空中飘扬着的可没一个是黑气球啊！’

他缓缓地放开手中的线，想让气球缓缓地高飞到空中。说实在的，黑人小孩心里可不是很兴奋，他认为这黒气球是不可能会高飞的。此时他忽然发觉原来黑气球也可以和其他颜色的气球一样飞上广阔的晴天。

他高兴地叫起来：‘原来黑气球也可以高飞！黑气球也可以高飞！’看着黑人小孩如此兴奋，卖气球老伯也不禁笑了起来。他缓缓地走过去，将他大大的手掌放在黑人小孩的肩膀上，柔声地对他说：‘小朋友，你要紧记一件事，气球之可以高飞并非因为外形和颜色，而在于它内的氢气。’

这黑人小孩长大后当了牧师。他在短短的三个月筹募了五百万美元，并启建一座专门医治重症的婴孩和幼童的医院。当记者问他凭借什么能力，完成这个几乎是不可能的任务时，他只微微一笑说：‘因为我相信我自己。’这位牧师在访问时，铿锵有力地说了一句话：‘相信你自己，沉睡在你心中的英雄便会苏醒。’

在日常生活中有些人就像那个黑人小孩一般，手中明明握有可以飞上晴空的气球，但却因为心中的迷惘，而对自身产生怀疑，让那个原可高飞的气球，硬生生地留在手中，不敢让它飞向灿烂的晴空。没错，在每个人的心中都住着一位伟大的英雄。只要你愿意相信自己，他将带领你完成任何美好的目标。

AREA B2 TALL TALE CONTEST
9TH July 2007 By Tee Yeh Ching, TM

On 9th July, 2 weeks after the Klang Bilingual Tall Tales contest, I and a few Bilingual members visited Area B2 Tall Tales contest at MAS Academy. Although there were no specific theme for the Tall Tales contest on that evening it did not turn off my excitement to be there on time.

Our Charter President Soh Fong Wai, ACS, ALB who served the Area B2 Governor started the meeting with installation ceremony for the new EXCO members from

E Cube Toastmasters Club.
Let me share with you some of the contestants who took part in the Tall Tales. Most of them were rather serious, mature and professionally dressed that make them seems like a group of “boring people”. But don’t judge a book by its covers because my judgment was wrong when they started their speeches. I could not believe my eyes. My mouth was wide opened and I was indeed impressed with their performances. They could act professionally, dance gracefully, sing beautifully and speak confidently

I could still remember vividly some of the contestants: -

Victor Cheong, CIMA Club – I Believe I Can Fly
He caught the audience’s attention by singing aloud “I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky” by R. Kelly and asked the audience whether we had dreams. He could finally fly like an eagle when he was traveling to London. He began by sharing his experience on the plane in the economic class which later being transferred to first class with a sexy stewardess serving him throughout the journey.

Ismail Yusof, Lafarge club – Good for digestion
He started his speech by giving a detail analysis of different usage of palm oil and papaya. I was rather stunned at the beginning but then he took a twist from a serious topic to an interesting research of a new fruit called PalmPaya – a combination of palm oil and papaya. To test the speed of our digestion systems, he illustrated that the palmpaya oil would be used to cook for our dinner that evening. We burst into laughter when we were told to be the lucky few who would be the guinea pig to try out the palmpaya oil.

Albert Chua, E Cube – Miss Pageant
He told us his experience in organizing the Miss Malaysia & Singapore beauty pageant where he was one of the judges. To take part in Miss Pageant, all contestants must adhere to one rule – she must not pregnant but not necessarily be a virgin. I personally loved his interesting sharing. He was also known as the ‘Malaysia Eric Tsang’ and was lucky enough to have the chance to meet with all the sexy ladies.

Sagadevan, MAS club – Saturday Night Fever
He was the chief cabin on the flight that carried 2 major Hollywood stars - Angeline Jolie and John Carlotta to Langkawi for the shooting of Saturday Night Fever 2. He was serving seafood to them without knowing that John was actually allergic to seafood. Later, John was struggling painfully and had unexpectedly requested him to replace his role as Angeline Jolie’s dance partner. Wow! He was too excited to say “Yes” and accepted the offer right away. He danced as smooth as Elvis Presley and his own belly dancing style was amusing as well.

That night, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I received a few feedbacks from Cheryl and Mei Lee in particular who said that majority of the contestants were well prepared and their speeches were well-organized. Mei Lee personally loved their spirit as they did not compete for the prize but indeed encourage each other to do the best. Cheryl felt that they have a strong delivery, good body gestures and voices which can bring out the “Umm…” of a speech. We think that it is a good idea for members to visit other clubs more often to benchmark our own performance for continuous improvements.

从第一口呼吸开始，来到这个新世界，我们的人生当中充满了许多第一次的体验。在本年度第次例常活动的主题为‘第一次’。这一次会议创下许多与‘第一次’有关的记录。稍后将为你一一报道。
首先，新任会长庄倩云致欢迎词。她很高兴地欢迎大家出席这次的活动，也希望本会可以继续蓬勃发展，吸引更多新会员加入。卸任会长苏鸿伟第一次以华语担任司仪，勇气可嘉。当晚的语言评论员邱宜山以标新立异的方式

带出语言评论环节。他除了为我们解释当晚与第一次有关的词语-‘初出茅庐’，也示范如何使用这个成语，还带出多音多义字-‘了’。在会议接近尾声时，他不但记录每位会员和嘉宾使用每日一词的次数，还一一指出当晚错误的语法，表扬优美的词句和正确的语法，深深地让在场的每一

位不禁从心里佩服他的细心聆听的技巧和高深的语文造诣。当晚出席的会友和嘉宾都异口同声地称赞他，纷纷表示获益不浅。

心灵小品有越洁敏讲述一则游牧民族拾鹅卵石，然后隔天变成黄金的故事。主要是告诉大家很多事‘做了就对了’，不要考虑太多。
第一次担任即席演说主持的李湘莹准备了许多与第一次有关的题目，如第一次面试、领薪水、出国和下厨等等。最令人嘉许的是来宾余燕芬勇敢的尝试即席演说，和我们分享了她第一次驾车的经验。
幽默演说主持由新会友陈伟达担任。他向我们描述一件发生在他一名朋友匪夷所思的离魂经验。可惜时间有限，让听众意犹未尽。伟达啊，伟达啊，下一回你可要好好掌握时间。
备稿演说环节则有三位会友: 蔡湘莹，李秋玲及庄倩云, 分别交出他们的作业二、七和高级作业一。蔡湘莹会友向我们提出她对人生的看法并希望大家可以找出属于自己的人生。李秋玲会友则告诉我们关于地中海贫血症这方面的资讯，她跟我们分享她当时被怀疑是地中海贫血症带原者的心情和打击。听完她的演说后，听众有股冲动想立刻去做一个身体检查。庄倩云会友在高级作业之巧说故事摘自《聊斋志异》里‘冬天里的荷花’，令人听出耳油。

继前页）茶点过后，评论环节由当天的总评论林嘉凤主持。她个人欣赏本会的会友可以说一口流利的华语并希望多来双语会与大家多多学习。当晚的得奖者名单如下：

INDENPENDANCE DAY

A Malaysia is going to celebrate its 50th birthday and that’s why the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) has chosen the theme “Independence Day” for that night. After break, the TME-Tang Chee Yik, TM along with all members and guests cried out loudly Independence : “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” to relive the episode of announcement of Day by Tunku Abdul Rahman back in 31st August 1957.

Alvin Yong TM as the ASA 2 of the night called for the meeting and it was followed by Jasmyne Chan to deliver her opening address. Even though that was his first attempt as the TME, Tang Chee Yik,TM has carried out his role excellent. With his humourous skills, the meeting was full of fun and was relaxing. I bet our members are looking forward to see Tang Chee Yik TM in action again. Keep up the good work, Tang!
To suit the theme “Independence Day”, the table topic master, Chua Siang Yin, TM has specially prepared all questions about Malaysia to test the audience how well they know about their home country. Let’s look at some of the sample questions:

•Your love to Malaysia (sound like title of a song)
•Your recommended tourist attraction spots to your foreign friends (Quick test on your geography!)
•Your favourite local food (local food only! No Mc D porridge or Roti John)
•Your selection between a Proton or a Perodua automobile manufacturer

We thought these were easy questions until we were tested. If you like challenges, please do not hesitate to volunteer and grab the opportunity to speak during the table topic session. That night, Lee Chiew Ling, TM was the best table topic speaker.

In the prepared speech session, there were 3 English assignment speakers and a Mandarin assignment speaker. Derric Tan TM, the first speaker told us about his hilarious encounter with the “ghost”. Jasmyne TM brought out the message “never judge a book by its cover” in her speech. On the other hand, Chew Siew Lei TM shared her miserable experience prior to her visit to Beijing as her visa was not updated. Finally Teh Siew Fei CC shared her story about her mother being nearly cheated by a salesperson who tried to sell off electrical appliances. In Toastmasters, we have the opportunity to hear various kind of story from different speakers. So, don’t be afraid to sign up as assignment speaker now!

We were glad to have Lim Beng Yee DTM as our general evaluator The award of best prepared speech and evaluator went to Jasmyne TM and Soh Fong Wai ACS, ALB respectively.

Club Evaluation & Humour Contest

On 11th Sept 2007, Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club (KBTC) organized the Bilingual Evaluation Contest to provide an avenue for members to compete among themselves and the winner will represent the club in the area contest in 6th October. It was a very special contest with 2 groups of contestants: English and Mandarin speakers.Our contest chair was Soh Fong Wai, ACS, ALB and the contest started with an opening address by the President Ivy Cherng, CC, CL.

The English test speaker was Janice Lee from TTDI Toastmasters Club with her speech titled - The War of ‘O’. She revealed to the audience that ‘O’ was actually stand for obesity and it was the major health issue nowadays. In fact, she shared with us some of the statistics on obesity and taught us how to live a healthier and happier life. Let us say “YES” to healthy life and “NO” to obesity.

The English contestants included Festus Jaya TM, Alvin Yong TM, Derric Tan TM, Lee Siang Yin TM, Tang Chee Yik TM and Foo Mei Lee TM. I believed all contestants evaluated creatively and at the minimum fulfilled the evaluation format. Some of the first timer such as Derric Tan TM and Foo Mei Lee TM were bold enough to take up the challenge to evaluate in both Mandarin and English. I saluted their attitude!

During the tea break, members and guests were served with a home-made red bean soup which were specially prepared by our president, Ivy I personally liked the red bean soup very much and had 2 bowls. Thanks, Ivy!

In the Mandarin evaluation session, we were glad to have Jatson Ho TM from DU Toastmasters Club as the test speaker with his title ‘Journey of Toastmasters’. Contestants included Yit Kit Ming TM, Derric Tan TM, Foo Mei Lee TM, Chong Yoke Lan TM and Chua Siang Yin TM.

Finally, the most anticipated moment arrived that was the announcement of result by the contest chair.

Not forgetting the group of judges and all the role players who worked hard during the contest and without any of them, the contest would not run smoothly. Thank you once again. Each and every one of them received a token of appreciation for their contributions in the contest.

幸福

这次例常活动的主题‘幸福’！那什么是幸福呢？幸福的定义对每一个来说都是不同的；有些人因美满家庭感到幸福，有些人因甜蜜爱情而感到幸福...，无论如何这是因人而异的。
会议开始由初试啼声的郑月琴掀开序幕，然后司仪符美丽介绍当天出席的三位来宾，他们是余燕芬，张慧芬以及李劲毅，他也讲解了讲演会的历史让来宾了解。心灵小品主持越洁敏从一则小故事里‘窗口’，告诉我们希望对一个人的重要，这就是生存的重要元素。另外，由黄耀鸿主持的幽默演说是以简短呈现。
第一环节即席演说由郑秀慧主持，她还是以一贯的作风-轻柔的声音呈现，题目多围绕在‘幸福’这个主题。难人可贵的是，即席评论则由不谙华文的郑月琴担任，虽然很有挑战性，还好都能一一的给于论点。加油！

第二环节的备稿演说有四位会友交出他们的作业；李湘莹的作业四‘应该，不该，活该’；张玉莲的作业五‘黑色的气球’,关于一个黑人小朋友和一群白人小朋友在玩着气球的故事，故事告诉我们不要因自卑而小看自己，要知道世上所有事都是公平的；张爱薇的作业六‘坚强’，告诉我们在面对困难时要坚强，不要气馁；最后由詹道威的作业四‘Practice Make Perfect’，这是英文演说。
当天总评论员由会长庄倩云亲自当任。会友最后遴选李秋玲为当晚的最佳即席讲员，最佳的备稿讲员由张玉莲获得，最佳评论员则由陈启育获得。

LOOK FORWARD

How many times in our life we tend to look backward thinking of the old school days or an old romance instead of looking forward? This is the message delivered to all Bilingual members by our President Soh during his presidential address in conjunction with the theme ‘LOOK FORWARD’. We should always look forward and never look backward’.

That day, we were lucky to have the consistent contest winner, N.K. Valli, ACS as our Toastmasters of the Evening. She has a resonant voice that is uplifting and is able to create a supportive ambience with her presence in our regular meeting.

In the table topics session, the table topics master, Tee Yeh Ching managed to encourage most of the members and guests to participate actively with her topics mostly focused on personal subjects.

Instead of talking about his favourite diving activities, the first speaker, Soh shared with us his experience watching the lion dance performance. It was great to have our guest Vera Goh to reveal to us on how she managed to change her career from lecturing to financial planning and her determination to improve her life. When asked about his favourite outdoor activities, Chee Yik expressed his thought that cycling is romantic and continue to say that if you have a partner to cycle with you, why not?

During the meeting, we had 3 English assignment speakers. First speaker is Lee Siang Yin with her second assignment titled “My passionate lecturer”. Next, Stuart Chan presented his second assignment on “The teenagers”. Tang Chee Yik spoke on the subject “Dress for success” for his 3rd assignment and Teh Siew Fei presented her mandarin ice breaker speech.

Congratulations to Tang Chee Yik who won both the best table topics speaker and the best assignment speaker. Same went to Yit Kit Ming who was awarded the best evaluator of the night.

Tall Tale & Installation Night 2007

BLACK & WHITE

The story began when The God of Heaven realised human being was living in a BLACK & WHITE life style i.e. woke up early in the morning, went to work till night and came home late everyday. It was a rather routine and boring life. Therefore, he appointed 3 angels to help to transform the "BORING" lifestyle and he started by selecting the Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club (KBTC).

BLACK & WHITE was the theme for Bilingual Installation Ceremony and Tall Tales Contest 2007. Our club mentor LeAnn Tang, DTM served as the master of ceremony while the Area C3 governor Dr. Caren Lee, CTM, our incoming area governor Dr. Alvin Teoh, ATMS, CL, our illustrious guest Low Yat Seow, DTM, Lim Kah Hong, DTM and Kwa Ngan Eng,DTM served as panel of judges.

The ceremony began with the discharging of outgoing EXCO members and installation of the new EXCO members. During the event, Bilingual Celebrate it’s achievements as the President Distinguished Club (PDC) for the term 2006-2007. Founded in November 2005, Bilingual has grown by leap and bounce. It is indeed an honour for Bilingual to achieve PDC awards with its establishment only one and half year ago.

The most interesting part of the ceremony was the tall tale contest where 9 members were selected to compete with each others for the top 3 winner. 4 contestants choose to speak in English while 5 others presented in Mandarin. The top 3 winners would be rewarded with the most precious gift, a COLOURFUL and INTERESTING LIFE by the God of Heaven.

2006/ 2007 年度吹牛大赛暨就职典礼

The first contestant, Foo May Lee talked about an accident that occurred at the Simpang Lima roundabout. She was the victim and somehow she survived. Amazing!

Chiam Tou Wee told us how good-looking he was, as handsome as Jimmy Lin during his tender age and his countless secret admirers. Malaysian Jimmy Lim! Chua Siang Yin described how her weight increased tremendously to 600kg due to an unsuccessful relationship and even tried to kill herself. Wow!

On the other hand, Tang Chee Yik described a weird incident happened in the university. It was about the curse of the smelly T-shirt. True enough, all the residents in first college hostel could not find their girlfriends till graduation. Scary!
Lee Siang Yin, presented a story of her disciplinary teacher, Puan Sumathi and the blackmail incident by “Kau Sai” during her primary school. Don’t ‘play- play’ with Pn. Sumathi!

Yit Kit Ming, spoke about the transformation from a ‘big sister’ character to what she was now. She injected humour with great usage of props and gesture into her speech. Furthermore, she even showed us her ‘tattoo’ on her arm to illustrate her ‘big sister’ attitude. Cool!

Jasmyne Chan entertained us with her title ‘Feng Shui’. It was about a Feng Shui Master, ‘T’ Master, who was mighty and powerful with colourful ribbons to promote different level of positive energy. What a creative way to link Toastmaster with Feng Shui!

Meanwhile, Lee Chiew Ling told us about the black angel and white angel. Finally, Jaya shared his experience during a fruit picking journey. Wow!

The climax of the event was the announcement of the result. The champion went to Yit Kit Ming. Chiam Tou Wee appeared to be the second prize winner and Lee Siang Yin walked away with the third prize. Congratulations to all the winners!

二零零七年六月五日吧生双语国际讲演会举办第三十一次的例常活动主题为 – ‘领悟’。
为当晚揭开序幕的是担任礼宾司的郑月琴。郑月琴本是英文组的会友。不谙华文的她挑战自己，第一次以汉语拼音的方式执行活动序幕与欢迎来宾。她的勇于尝试彻底贯彻了双语讲演会的精神，非常值得也非常难得。月琴，加油！同时对当晚的司仪庄倩云而言，这一次的会议让她感触良多。一年前的同时，会友庄倩云也是为本会的例常活动出任司仪一职。这一年来看见许多会友从讲演会中领悟演讲的技巧，领导才能的重要到改变人生，让她觉得讲演会的确让人受益不浅。
心灵小品主持为我们带来一个乞丐如何蜕变成一名有价值的人的故事。一位老妇人没有因为乞丐失去一只手而否认他的工作能力，以搬砖头换取金钱的方法让乞丐觉悟他仍有人的尊严，从而激励他向上，发奋图强，活得有尊严。出人头地的乞丐不忘恩情，最后亲自登门道谢，感激老妇人当初的提携。

第一环节里的即席演说是由郑秀慧会友主持。当晚最佳即席演说则由黄耀鸿会友胜出。
第二环节的备稿演说环节共有三位，交作业一的有黄耀鸿。他以立新的方式呈现出不同的时间和地点享用与享受苹果的感受。同时交出作业十的有越洁敏和邱宜山会友。恭喜两位会友完成十个作业！两位的作业常带有温馨，正义和幽默的元素，其强而有力的讯息让人留下深刻的印象。期待二位的高级作业！
第三环节的评论方式比以往特殊，是以两组会友组成的评论团为作业十作出评论，另有正式评论员给与回馈。这一次的最佳评论员落在庄倩云会友的手里。二零零六／二零零七年度的最后一次华语例常活动准时于十点钟结束。我们在下一次会议再见！
